FORT MYERS — Tourism officials in Lee County announced they've hired a German agency to promote the destination in Germany. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau appointed Frankfurt-based Global Communications Experts to handle marketing and public relations in Germany. The agency will be responsible for maintaining contacts with tour operators, travel agencies, airlines and consumers.

In 2011, Germany was the second-largest international source of tourists for the Fort Myers area with 111,028 visitors staying in paid accommodations, according to the bureau's statistics. In July, 16,480 visitors from Germany stayed in paid accommodations in Lee County, a 377% increase over the same month one year ago and 7% of total visitors to the area.

“Global Communications Experts convinced us with its creativity, expertise, experience and excellent contacts,” says Tamara Pigott, the bureau's executive director.

Germans already represent a significant share of international tourists to the region. Air Berlin currently flies nonstop from Southwest Florida International Airport to Dusseldorf, Germany.
