NAPLES — JetBlue abruptly suspended talks with the Naples Municipal Airport about providing nonstop airline service to New York-area airports.
“This is unexpected news, and this development will be discussed during Thursday's board meeting,” says Ted Soliday, executive director of the city of Naples Airport Authority, in a statement.
JetBlue has suspended discussions with Naples airport officials indefinitely “until the community decision-making process plays itself out,” Soliday says in the statement.
While Naples residents may welcome airline service to the city, there are some who are opposed to the noise of large commercial aircraft. In addition, there are technical hurdles to overcome such as the capacity of the runway to handle larger aircraft.
There hasn't been commercial service from Naples since 2007 and Naples residents usually fly from the nearby Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers, where JetBlue already has a presence.
