Corporate governance is hot.

With the government picking the winners and losers in the economy and deciding who gets paid and how much, the corporate-governance debate is raging once again.

To shed some light on the subject, Florida Gulf Coast University's Institute for Responsible Corporate Governance is hosting a series of speakers on the subject this year.

First up will be Kayla Gillan, senior advisor and deputy chief of staff for the Securities and Exchange Commission. She will speak on the subject of the agency's role in shaping corporate-governance rules and pending proposals on Nov. 13 at the Fort Myers campus.

Gillan has an impressive resume that includes a 16-year stint at the giant pension fund, California Public Employees' Retirement System (Calpers), most recently as its general counsel. She's also a founding member of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board.
