Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce seeks nominations

The Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for the 2005 Small Business Person of the Year. The categories are Small Business Person of the Year with 10 or less employees, Small Business Person of the Year with 11 or more employees and Rookie Small Business Person of the Year, a person in business 3 years or less as of this past Jan. 1.

To qualify, a business must be a member of the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce and franchise businesses are not eligible. Nomination forms are available at the Chamber office, 6960 Gulf of Mexico Drive, Longboat Key. To request a nomination form, call (941) 387-9519. The deadline for nominations is March 4. The award presentation will be made on June 9 at the Chamber's Annual Small Business Week breakfast to be held at the Longboat Key Hilton Beachfront Resort, from 7:30 a.m. until 9 a.m.

NADCO moves headquarters

to Manatee County

Gov. Jeb Bush announced that NADCO Inc. will bring its corporate headquarters to Manatee County. A manufacturer of environmentally friendly tape products, the headquarters will create 21 new, high-value jobs and make an overall capital investment of $1.1 million within the region.

NADCO plans to renovate and expand over 22,000 square feet of manufacturing and headquarter office space in Manatee County, as well as purchase new equipment.

To ensure Florida's competitiveness within the manufacturing sector, Bush recently proposed a policy to eliminate the current 6% sales tax on R&D machinery and the $50,000 tax revenue threshold on manufacturing equipment for Florida manufacturers in an expansion mode and to provide a sales tax exemption on any new manufacturing equipment purchased by companies that expand their production output by 10%.

Michigan company to open

Bradenton manufacturing plant

The Economic Development Council and the Manatee Chamber of Commerce announced that Michigan's Mac Arthur Corp. will open a manufacturing facility in Manatee County.

The Mac Arthur Corp., which makes custom labels, will open the facility in the Manasota Industrial Park in Bradenton later this month. It will initially employ six to eight people with plans to double that number by year's end.

Mac Arthur landed in Bradenton with the help of a $75,000 Qualified Target Industry Tax Refund from the State of Florida.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office awarded HandyTrac a patent for a new process of using an external Web site to automatically call and download key data from a customer's datalog computer for online reporting and archiving purposes. HandyTrac is a supplier of computerized key control for the multi-housing industry.

Grapevine Communications

adds new clients, awards

Grapevine Communications is celebrating its fourth anniversary with new clients and new awards. Grapevine will be handling four new accounts in real estate, including Pruett Builders, Heritage Development, Courtney Palms Condominiums and The Tower Residences at the Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota. Grapevine will also handle new clients in health care, including First Physician's Group and Lerner-Cohen Healthcare. Other new clients include Envision Marketing, a marketing services company in Seattle, and Peloton Pallet Services, Canada's only national provider of pallet services.

Grapevine was honored with two Gold ADDYs and seven Silver ADDYs on projects for various clients, including Broadway Promenade, Grande Oaks Preserves, Lauderdale One, IFCO Systems, Body & Spirit and the Young Professionals Group of Sarasota during the ADDY awards ceremony on Feb. 19.

SKY Sotheby's International Realty, a luxury real estate firm based in Sarasota, participated in an orientation conference held for companies that are part of the Sotheby's International Realty® network of brokerages.

The firm, which joined the network in October 2004, attended workshops on Sotheby's International Realty® business and marketing resources and how to make full use of an association with the venerable, 260-year-old auction house. The conference was held Feb. 1-4 for 18 Sotheby's International Realty® companies from across the country, as well as Canada and Costa Rica.

WCI wins School's 'Business Partner of the Year' honors

Laurel Nokomis School nominated WCI as its "Business Partner of the Year." WCI won on the district level for its support of the Nokomis school through its Habitats for Learning field study of environmental awareness and green building, which was presented to students at Venetian Golf & River Club.

Venetian is certified as a Green Design Standard community by the Florida Green Building Coalition and is one of four communities in the state recognized by the group.

Design Source sweeps

Web design category

Design Source Advertising swept the Web design (interactive) category at the Fifth Annual ADDY Awards Feb. 19. The firm was awarded a Gold ADDY, a prestigious Amy Award and a Judges Choice Award. Design Source submitted 10 entries in the competition and was the recipient of nine different awards.

The agency won its Judges Choice Award for its creation of the Petz Custom Homes Web site; the same project also took an Amy Award for scoring highest points in a major category. Design Source also won eight Silver ADDYs for campaigns and projects for Zirkelbach Construction, Smokin' Martini and U Magazine, as well as its own in-house interactive efforts.

Infinium Labs will present its flagship Phantom Game Service, built on Microsoft Windows XP Embedded, in the Microsoft booth No. 1602 in San Francisco's Moscone Center during CMP Media's Embedded Systems Conference, March 6-10.

The ESC demonstration follows the presentation of Infinium's Phantom Game Service at the Microsoft Windows Embedded Device Showcase exhibit during the recent Consumer Electronics Show in January in Las Vegas.
