Manatee county administrator receives environmental award

Lennar Communities presented the first annual Environmental Heritage Award to Charlie Hunsicker, Manatee County's ecosystems management administrator.

Hunsicker has spent the past 24 years with Manatee County government, involved in a wide variety of environmental projects. He and his 10-person department oversee 30,000 acres of conservation area with responsibilities ranging from wildlife and hunting management, beach nourishment, greenways and blueways, and wetland creation and recovery.

Top sales producers honored

at 'Night of the Stars'

The 2004 Million Dollar Circle Awards "Night of the Stars" was held jointly by the Sales and Marketing Councils (SMC) of the Home Builders Associations of Manatee and Sarasota counties to award top-producing onsite sales associates of new home builders.

The top producer in the salesperson category was Barry Bright of Lee Wetherington Homes with $49.6 million in sales; Janet Wilson of Homes by Towne in the sales team category with $86.3 million; and Michelle Burke Phillips of Lee Wetherington Homes topped the sales manager category with $185 million in sales.

Palmetto tomato packer

celebrates 70th anniversary

Harllee Packing Inc. of Palmetto, the oldest commercial tomato packer in Florida, is celebrating 70 years of packing under the "HARLLEE" brand label.

For the 70th anniversary of the brand, Harllee Packing Inc. is going "retro" with its label. The special anniversary label resembles the old style lithograph label Harllee's used in 1935.

Argus Marine changes name,

adds maintenance program

Argus Marine, provider of marine services in Sarasota and surrounding areas, has changed its name to Marine Team™. With the new name will come the addition of operations and management personnel, as well as an influx of capital.

New services include a proactive maintenance program which takes a comprehensive approach to yacht care through a combination of regular evaluation and maintenance.

offers profit sharing

Michael Saunders, president and founder of Michael Saunders & Co., recently held a gathering at Selby Gardens to announce the company's new profit sharing program to the 180 staff members. The event celebrated the staff's accomplishments in setting record sales in 2004.

Two Manatee Community College administrators presented a how-to guide to organizing community events at the 2005 Gulf Region Industry Training and Services Conference in Mobile, Ala.

Dr. Idelia Phillips, director of the office of career and technical education, and Dr. Tom Davenport, director of workforce development, presented a seminar titled, "The Business, Industry, Government Road Show."

May is Law Month

in Manatee County

The Manatee County Bar Association will observe Law Day throughout May with several events and activities surrounding the 2006 theme of "The American Jury: We The People In Action".

Law Day is a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law and underscores how law and the legal process have contributed to the freedoms that all Americans share. May is also designated as "Jury Appreciation Month" within the Manatee County courthouse by the bar association, the office of the court administrator and the clerk of circuit court.

four-star designation

Mobil Travel Guide announced its 2005 "America's Best Hotel and Resort Spas," which includes The Members Spa Club at The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota, one of only 46 properties to receive Mobil's coveted four-star designation.

Videographer receives

award for documentary

John Nopper, an Access 19 videographer is the recipient of the award of excellence, the highest honor given by The Videographer Awards. Nopper received the award for the television program "On Patrol."

Nopper followed Sarasota police recruits for several weeks, documenting the rigors of becoming a Sarasota officer. There were 2,293 entries from the U.S. and several foreign countries. The Videographer Awards is an international awards organization, which sets professional standards for video production.

New fitness studio

opens in Lakewood Ranch

20 Minutes To Fitness® has opened its first slow cadence, strength-training studio at the Lake Osprey Retail Village in Lakewood Ranch. In addition, the studio's Web site, www.20minutestofitness.com, has been launched.

The site includes basic information about the program, press stories from national publications and the capacity to communicate with staff. Soon to be added will be the ability to schedule appointments on line with individual trainers.

Sarasota County named a finalist

for All-America City Award

Sarasota County is among 30 finalists competing to become one of the National Civic League's (NCL) 10 All-America Cities. The county will participate in a final round of the All-America City competition in Atlanta, Ga., June 23 through 25.

The All-America City Award is the nation's longest running civic recognition program. It encourages and recognizes civic excellence, honoring the communities in which citizens, government, businesses and nonprofit organizations demonstrate successful resolution of critical community issues. Since 1949, more than 4,000 communities have competed, and nearly 500 have been designated All-America Cities.

Sarasota Criminal Justice Center

pursues ENERGY STAR rating

Sarasota County is pursuing ENERGY STAR status for the Criminal Justice Center at 2701 Ringling Blvd. in downtown Sarasota. Energy Coordinator Gary Patton says the building is in the process of a retrofit to comply with ENERGY STAR'S strict requirements, and should be rated by the end of the year.

At that time, it will become one of only 27 ENERGY STAR-rated buildings in all of Florida and one of only 2,009 in the U.S. It will be the second building in Sarasota to earn the ENERGY STAR rating. The Sarasota County Judicial Center at 2002 Ringling Blvd. became the first in November 2003 when it scored 83 out of a possible 100 points, placing it in the top 20% of the most efficient buildings in the U.S.
