The Manatee Chamber of Commerce has hired a new executive director for its economic development agency, which Nancy Engel has run for the past 25 years. Engel announced her pending retirement last September.

Eric Basinger, who previously served as the executive director of the Elmore County Economic Development Authority in Wetumpka, Ala., was hired to replace Engel. Basinger starts June 1.

Basinger's role at the Elmore County agency, which he helped found, is similar to what the chamber is hiring him to do at the Economic Development Council: Promote business relocations and expansions in the county.

Wetumpka, with a population of 5,700, is the Elmore County seat and is nine miles northeast of Montgomery, the state capital.
