TAMPA — Zim American Integrated Shipping will soon begin operating a direct container service between Tampa and Mexico, the Tampa Port Authority said today.

On Jan. 29, Zim will begin chartering two ships that will travel from Tampa to Kingston, Jamaica, to Veracruz, Mexico, to Altamira, Mexico, and then back to Tampa.

Zim also recently expanded its service to South America through the Tampa port. The shipping firm based in Israel has been operating from the Tampa Port Authority since 2003.

This summer, the Brookings Institute estimated that the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area handled $7.9 billion in exports annually, representing 6.8% of the area's economic activity.

Last November, the Tampa Hillsborough Economic Development Corp. led a trade mission to Mexico City and Guadalajara.
