TAMPA — Just barely one-third of voters under 30 years old in Florida, 34%, say today's leaders represent their interests, according to a survey released in the backdrop of the Republican National Convention.

Moreover, 89% of the survey respondents say the poor economy impacts their daily life, while 84% say key life decisions, including a family and homeownership, are on hold until the economy improves. The survey was commissioned by Generation Opportunity, a nonprofit organization, which polled 524 randomly selected Floridians between 18 and 29 years old. Generation Opportunity says it hopes the survey results spur politicians to take notice, and young people to vote in higher numbers than previous elections.

“These numbers should serve as a sobering wake-up call to elected officials who continue to pursue an agenda that stifles job creation and stymies economic growth,” Generation Opportunity President Paul Conway says in a release. “The failed economic policies emanating from the White House are literally devastating an entire generation of Floridians.”

More than two-thirds of the respondents, 71%, say they will vote in the presidential election this year, the survey shows. Also, in a rebuff to President Barack Obama's move to soften student debt obligations, 64% of respondents believe the availability of more quality, full-time jobs upon graduation is more important than lower student loan interest rates.
