Verizon cuts 132 Tampa jobs

TAMPA — Verizon Wireless will shut down two Tampa call centers later this year, eliminating 132 jobs, according to filings with the Agency for Workforce Innovation.

On Oct. 1, a call center with 77 employees will be closed, followed by another closure on Nov. 5, causing 55 more job cuts. Both call centers are located at 5701 E. Hillsborough Ave.

Verizon Wireless (also known as Cellco Partnership) is the largest mobile telecommunications network in the country, with more than 100 million subscribers. Headquartered in New Jersey, the company is a joint venture between Verizon Communications (symbol: VZ) and Vodafone.

Verizon Communications earned $107 billion in revenues in 2010, and its stock is up 22% over the last 12 months.
