Tampa has made the top 25 rankings of U.S. cities with the most technology jobs by Bloomberg Businessweek magazine. But before we get too excited about this news, we should take a closer look.

For starters, Tampa came in at No. 25, based on a total of 53,921 high-tech jobs, a $3.8 billion high-tech payroll and an average annual wage of $71,143. The magazine article points out that Tampa area tech businesses laid off 7% of their employees last year in sectors such as telecommunications services, computer system design, and engineering services, with 500 IT jobs being cut by PricewaterhouseCoopers this year.

Elsewhere across the country, 47,000 tech jobs have been added so far this year amid resurgent demand for tech products in Asia and Latin America, according to Moody's Analytics. That represents 15% growth in tech jobs. The nation's tech industry lost 307,000 jobs over the last three years.

New York ranked at the top of the list with 316,971 high-tech jobs, $31.2 billion payroll and a $98,541 average wage. D.C., San Jose, Calif., Boston and Dallas-Fort Worth fill out the top five.
