The St. Pete Pier has taken top honors in the Urban Open Space category at the 2022 Urban Land Institute Americas Awards for Excellence.

According to a news release, 68 projects were nominated for the awards program, which was created in 1979 to recognize superior development efforts in the private, public and nonprofit sectors. An 11-member jury of experts then narrowed the field to 21 finalists.

Winning projects, the release states, represent the highest standards of achievement in the land use profession and encompass a wide range of land uses, sizes, investments and geographic locations. In addition to Urban Open Space, categories included Equitable Development, Low-Carbon Development and Small-Scale Development, as well as an open category.

The other winners are:

  • EPIC – Hollywood, California
  • Essex Crossing – New York
  • Homekey LifeMoves | Mountain View – Mountain View, California
  • HopeWorks Station North – Everett, Washington
  • Indigenous Peoples Experience at Fort Edmonton Park – Edmonton, Alberta
  • Meyer Memorial Trust Headquarters – Portland, Oregon
  • PopCourts! – Chicago
  • Taylor Street Apartments and Little Italy Branch Library – Chicago
  • Truax Lofts – San Diego

Helios Education Campus in Phoenix and Monon Boulevard and Midtown Plaza in Carmel, Indiana, received honorable mentions.

“I was humbled to work with such a committed group of jurors to select finalists who most clearly reflect the possibilities for shaping the physical environment,” states Marilynn Davis, senior adviser at HR&A Advisors in Atlanta and chair of the 2022 ULI Americas Awards for Excellence jury, in the release. “Our horizons have grown for having participated in this exercise and for having seen how these projects have transformed cities and lives.”

The winners of the ULI Americas awards will go on to compete against projects in Europe and Asia for the 2022 ULI Global Awards for Excellence, with winners expected to be announced in October.
