TAMPA — Passenger traffic at Tampa International Airport increased by 3.7% in May relative to last year. A 16.7% gain in international traffic helped propel that growth, a statement from the airport says.
The positive trend in passenger activity at TIA is a welcome contrast to the airport's performance over the past few years. “After two years of continuous declines during 2008 and 2009, and slow growth in 2010, we are now beginning to see growth trends which are making us optimistic for the remainder of 2011,” says Damian Brooke, vice president of business planning for TIA.
Christopher Minner, the airport's vice president of marketing, attributed the boost in international traffic to new service to London offered by British Airways, as well as new routes to San Juan, operated by both JetBlue and AirTran.
The airport expects traffic to show roughly 4.5% over-the-year growth in summer 2011.
