TAMPA — Korea Telecom, the second-largest mobile operator in South Korea, is now providing its customers with mobile video capabilities developed by Tampa's Syniverse Technologies.
Syniverse's product enables Korea Telecom customers to access live video streams on their mobile devices without installing any new hardware, software, or application.
“Our solution makes video communications available anywhere, anytime, regardless of network or device,” explained Syniverse CEO Tony Holcombe.
That interoperability — the fact that any device on any network can utilize the technology — could mean huge value in the U.S. mobile market. Mark Beccue, an analyst with ABI Research, relates the field of mobile video technology to text messaging.
“The turning point for mass-market SMS and MMS adoption was when we achieved interoperability and consumers had the freedom to send and receive messages to and from anyone on any mobile network or device,” Beccue explains. “For mobile video adoption to take off, we will need to see the same network-agnostic, device-agnostic interoperability.”
Syniverse Technologies will soon become part of the Carlyle Group, which agreed to pay $2.6 billion to acquire the Tampa firm in October.
