Sunny Days

An analysis of where people nationwide are moving to reveals a significant, albeit obvious, nugget: People love living in sunshine.

An analysis of where people nationwide are moving to reveals a significant, albeit obvious, nugget: People love living in sunshine.

That's why the seventh annual Penske Truck Rental Top Moving Destinations list is dominated by Sun Belt cities. Seattle and Denver are the only cities in the top 10 that aren't in the Sun Belt, and notably absent from the list are any Midwest and Northeast cities.

The data for the list are compiled by probing one-way consumer truck rental reservations made over Penske's website, its call center and in-person reservations at rental locations.

Florida and Texas make up 40% of the top 10. In the Sunshine State, Tampa/Sarasota ranks No. 5 and Orlando is No. 6, while in the Lone Star State Dallas/Fort Worth is No. 2 and Houston is No. 9. Coming back to the list for the first time since 2012 is Charlotte. And Atlanta, for the seventh straight year — every year the survey has come out — is the No. 1 city to which people move.

“It is remarkable that Atlanta continues to dominate this list,” says Joe Hill, senior vice president for Penske Truck Leasing's Southeast region, in a statement. Hill himself is adding to the data: He and his
family, the company says, are in the process of relocating to metro Atlanta. He previously oversaw operations in the company's mountain region.

Some other interesting nuggets from the Penske report include:
Sun Belt cities have occupied the top third of every Penske moving destination list;

Historically, four Southeast markets (Atlanta, Charlotte, Orlando and Tampa/Sarasota) have made the list;

Florida and Texas are the only states to have multiple markets appear on all seven lists;

Dallas/Fort Worth has finished as a runner-up three times, in 2010, 2012 and 2016;

Denver's current No. 4 ranking is the market's highest-ever finish; in 2013 it was ninth;

Phoenix has never fallen below the top five while appearing on every list.
