Miami may get the honor of naming the first street after our new president, as a bill is filed designating a portion of Biscayne Boulevard in Miami-Dade County “Barack Obama Boulevard” starting July 1.But as simple a piece of legislation as one might imagine, this remains government, and the name change must wind through three committees: Roads, Bridges & Ports Policy Committee; Economic Development & Community Affairs Policy Council; and the Full Appropriations Council on Education & Economic Development.

It seems bureaucracy follows wherever our new president and his good name go.

The great irony in this is that the bill is sponsored by Bush — State Rep. James Bush, III, D-Miami-Dade. No relation. Obviously.

Coffee Talk hopes that Miamians won't shorten the name as we often do with Martin Luther King to MLK. Despite the over-porked economic stimulus bill, B.O. Boulevard just is not befitting a U.S. President.
