The local products program at Lakeland-based Publix brings regional fare to stores.
The local love is everywhere.
In early 2017, Lakeland-based Publix Super Markets Inc. introduced its local program into all of its stores.
Today the program is still going strong in the company’s 1,184 stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
Through the program, local products from the areas where Publix has stores are sold at Publix locations. Customers can find the products on special local end caps at the end of aisles.
“The whole idea behind it is to give us a chance to feature those offerings that are right in our backyard,” Publix spokesman Brian West tells Coffee Talk.
West says Publix is happy with how the program is going. “The biggest thing for us is our customers really appreciate it," West says. "Customers like to support their local economy.”
The Publix buying department selects local products for the program. One local product that will land on Publix shelves soon is coffee from Lakeland-based Patriot Coffee Roasters. In June, customers will be able to buy Patriot Coffee Roasters products at hundreds of Florida stores.
Each product is generally offered in the area surrounding where it originates, with products from Florida typically not offered in faraway states like Virginia. “Every product is different,” West says. “So we evaluate each product independently and figure out what the best fit is for the product.”
