TAMPA — The Tampa Port Authority says its newest terminal, the Tampa Gateway Rail terminal, is nearing completion.
The project includes two new improvements for the port: an ethanol pipeline distribution system and on-dock intermodal container capability. According to a release, the project, announced last year as a public-private partnership, would provide the first on-dock intermodal container capability in Florida.
The terminal is a collaborative project between rail company CSX Corp., the Tampa Port Authority and Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, L.P. The Port built new rail track and support infrastructure to handle 96-car unit train deliveries, according to the release. Kinder Morgan, meanwhile, invested in new pipelines to transport the ethanol from the rail offloading facilities to its Tampa terminal, where it can be distributed to other Tampa terminals. The Tampa Gateway Rail facility is adjacent to the Port's container terminal.
“We're very pleased to be a part of an innovative and efficient logistics solution to providing Tampa and central Florida markets with ethanol,” Kinder Morgan's products pipeline president Tom Bannigan says in a release. “We expect this facility to readily accommodate anticipated growth in central Florida biofuels demand.”
