FORT MYERS — The number of passengers traveling through Southwest Florida International Airport rose 3.3% in October compared to the same month one year ago, but traffic remains down for the year.

Nearly half a million passengers traveled through the Fort Myers airport in October. Although that was an increase over October 2011, passenger traffic remained down 3.9% for the year-to-date compared with the same period last year.

Airlines have cut flights to Fort Myers as fuel prices have increased. Takeoffs and landings at Southwest Florida International fell 1.9% in October compared with the same month one year ago.

The traffic leader in October was Delta, with 123,633 passengers traveling to and from Fort Myers. Rounding out the top five airlines were AirTran (81,620 passengers), Southwest (66,506), JetBlue (51,635) and US Airways (49,251).

In 2011, more than 7.5 million passengers passed through the Fort Myers airport. That made it one of the top 50 U.S. airports for passenger traffic.
