Avelo Airlines, which has been rapidly expanding in both Florida and the west coast of the state, is adding Wilmington, Delaware to its list of nonstop flights from Tampa and Fort Myers.

The airport in Delaware’s largest city, Wilmington Airport, under the call letters ILG, will also become the fourth base of operations for Connecticut-based Avelo, according to a statement. Flights to and from Wilmington are scheduled to commence in February, the release adds.

Avelo officials had previously said the airline planned to open a base of operations at Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers, creating 35 jobs in the process. But in the Oct. 20 Wilmington announcement, airline officials backtracked on the Fort Myers hub, saying it “postponed previously announced plans to open a base at Fort Myers due to a significant reduction in travel demand resulting from Hurricane Ian.” Avelo flights from Fort Myers, under the call letters RSW, to Hartford, Connecticut remain intact.

The nonstop Wilmington service, meanwhile, will include Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and West Palm Beach, in addition to Tampa and Fort Myers. “The Delaware Valley region wants and deserves more affordable, convenient and reliable air travel,” Avelo Airlines Founder, Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy says in the release.

The Tampa flights to Wilmington will be on Thursdays and Sundays, starting Feb. 2, the airline says. The Fort Myers flights will be Mondays and Fridays, starting Feb. 3.

Avelo has flown more than 1.2 million customers on over 10,000 flights since it debuted its first flight April 28, 2021. With the addition of ILG, Avelo will serve 32 destinations across the U.S.
