A culinary phenomenon worldwide, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts has more than 1,400 stores in 34 countries.
Yet until now, Southwest Florida doughnut lovers were forced to drive either to Tampa or Tamarac to experience the signature glazed confections hot and fresh off the conveyor belt cooking and glazing system.
That changed Oct. 16 when the “Hot Doughnuts Now” sign officially lit up for the first time in Southwest Florida, at the new Krispy Kreme shop in Fort Myers at 4904 S. Cleveland Ave. The 3,200-square-foot shop will feature the classic Krispy Kreme ambience offering premium coffee and more than a dozen varieties of Krispy Kreme doughnuts, including its signature Original Glazed variety beloved around the world. Doughnut enthusiasts will even be able to witness the doughnuts being made before their eyes.
The doughnut machine is separated from the dining room and counter area by glass. It drops, fries, retrieves and moves doughnuts through the glazing system along a conveyor system that can produce as many as 150 dozen — that's 18,00 — doughnuts per hour.
Krispy Kreme of South Florida, which owns and operate eight locations on the east coast of Florida, owns the new Fort Myers location. Headquartered in Winston-Salem, N.C., Krispy Kreme was founded in 1937.
