Leave it to Pat Neal to zig.
Neal, a Lakewood Ranch-based homebuilder and previous Review Entrepreneur of the Year, is confident his new pool division, Neal Signature Pools, will be successful — even as several other pool companies close due to the economic malaise.
In fact, Neal expects the unit to be profitable in just its first two months, at least based on signed contracts.
The lynchpin in the new business venture was the addition of the division's vice president John Collier, who previously built pools for Kimball Hill Homes and then later ran his own pool company in Apollo Beach.
“We have always found the pool trade to be extremely hard to manage because it involves seven different trades,” Neal says. “The margins are pretty good in the pool business, but you have to be very focused. John Collier is a wonderful leader. He's [also] good with budgets and customers.”
The homebuilder supplies Collier with an already developed large clientele basis — new homebuyers — and lower costs from that volume.
