Death and taxes are big business in Naples.

The city's law firms principally deal in trust and estate planning, as wealthy retired residents figure out creative ways to pass on their gains to the next generation without having to pay more than their fair share to Uncle Sam.

But as the region's economy evolves and companies like Hertz relocate to the area, some firms are beefing up the ranks of corporate lawyers. For example, Quarles & Brady recently hired Laura Holm as partner in its corporate services practice group.

“There's a lot of corporate work here,” Holm says, citing the high number of retired CEOs in Naples who continue to be involved in entrepreneurial ventures in Florida and across the country. Not all of them want to hire Chicago or New York lawyers. “For some deals, people want a local lawyer.”

Holm, formerly with Akerman in Fort Lauderdale, joined Quarles in February. “The day I got here I had five deals waiting for me,” she says.

Among the areas Holm sees ripe for legal representation are retail, consumer goods and health care. “Twenty percent of the deals involve real estate,” she says.
