Employers on the Gulf Coast are more optimistic about hiring employees in the second quarter than they were a year ago, a recent survey by Manpower shows.

For example, 15% of employers in the Tampa Bay region surveyed plan to increase staff while 5% plan reductions. That's a more favorable outlook than the same time last year, when 9% planned to hire and 8% planned to fire.

Further south, 12% of companies surveyed by Manpower in the Naples area plan to hire while 10% plan to reduce staffing levels. In Sarasota and Fort Myers, as many companies plan to hire as fire (8%).

Hiring plans at companies south of the Tampa Bay region are weaker in the second quarter than they were in the first quarter, but they're still much higher than they were a year ago. This may reflect the more seasonal nature of business in areas such as Naples, Fort Myers and Sarasota, which see an increase in temporary residents in the winter months.
