BRADENTON — The Manatee County Commission selected longtime local lawyer Mitchell “Mickey” Palmer as the new county attorney.

Palmer, the president of the Manatee County Bar Association who runs his own legal practice, will replace county attorney Tedd Williams Jr. Williams previously announced his retirement.

The commission chose Palmer over three other finalists, a list that included attorneys from Bradenton, Polk County and Tallahassee. Palmer will likely start his new job next month.

The county attorney's office provides legal advice and representation for the commissioners. It also oversees the county's risk management division. It currently has 23 employees.
