FORT MYERS — Lee County officials granted 55 permits to build single-family homes in September, double the number from the same month last year.

For the year ending Sept. 30, the Lee County Department of Community Development says single-family permits have risen 30% and multifamily permits increased 9% compared with the same period one year ago.

Commercial construction took a holiday in September, however. The value of commercial permits in September was just $507,375 compared with $6.5 million in September 2011. Still, August saw $16.5 million in commercial permits.

Permits of all kinds are up 4.5% for the year ending Sept. 30 compared with the previous year, the county says.
