FORT MYERS — Builders in Lee County pulled permits to build 556 single-family homes in 2012, a 49% increase over the previous year.

Homebuilders also pulled 189 permits for multifamily homes, a 35% increase over 2011, according to the Lee County Department of Community Development.

Meanwhile, permitting for commercial construction totaled $62.5 million in 2012, a 49% decline from 2011. However, the 2011 numbers were skewed by the construction of big projects such as Park Royal Hospital and JetBlue Park, the new spring training facility for the Boston Red Sox baseball team.

In December, homebuilders pulled 56 permits for single-family homes and 15 permits for multifamily homes. In December 2011, builders pulled just six single-family and six multifamily homes.

However, contractors pulled $517,636 worth of commercial permits in December compared with $7 million in December 2011.
