Law Week Celebration (Tampa edition)

More than 300 people heard former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell speak May 5 at the Hillsborough County Bar Association's 2004 Law Week celebration.

This year's event, chaired by 13th Circuit Judge Emmett "Lamar" Battles, highlighted the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case, Brown v. Board of Education. This is the 50th anniversary of the precedent-setting case.

As part of the weeklong celebration, the association's law week committee produced a program on public school desegregation in cooperation with the Tampa Bay area's public TV station, WEDU-TV

During the program at the Hyatt Regency Tampa, the association also honored several guests. The group gave awards for outstanding community service to Tampa police Cpl. Timothy J. Degusipe and Hillsborough Sheriff's Detective Charlie Keene.

The group also presented its Peer Mediator of the Year awards to Sarah Shaffner of Buckhorn Elementary School, Shambrey Oliver of Burnett Middle School and Demario Mosley of Blake High School.
