Recent concerns about an economic slowdown haven't hurt new-home construction in the Lee-Collier area.
Builders started 1,172 homes in gated communities in those counties in the second quarter, according to market tracker Metrostudy. (The firm doesn't track home starts on scattered lots.)
Second-quarter housing starts are up 11% compared with the second quarter of 2014. The annualized pace of starts rose an even more impressive 22% over the same period, Metrostudy says.
In Lee County, the rate of annualized starts is up 21% in the second quarter and the sales closing rate is up 14% compared with the same quarter in 2014. It's the same story in Collier County: The rate of annualized starts is up 22% and closings are up 15% over the same period.
