FORT MYERS — Hoteliers in Lee County reported revenues per room rose 17% in January as the tourism season got a strong start.
Hoteliers saw revenues increase because they filled more rooms and raised rates higher in January than they did in the same month one year ago. Revenue per available room, an important financial gauge that combines occupancy and average daily rate, rose 17% to $79.90 in January compared with January 2012, according to data from Smith Travel.
The average daily rate at hotels in Lee County rose 6% in January to $122.05 compared with January 2012. Occupancy rose 6.2 percentage points to 65.5% in the same period.
The increase mirrors the jump in passenger traffic at Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers, which rose 7% in January compared with January 2012. In February, the airport saw another 5.8% increase in passenger traffic compared with the same month a year ago.
