Welcome centers are so 2019.

At least that’s how some homeowners felt at Connerton, a master-planned community of about 2,000 residents in central Pasco County, about 20 miles north of Tampa.

Residents of Connerton, a Lennar development, told officials with the homebuilder that with many people working from home, the welcome center was suddenly outdated and underused. So Lennar shifted, and executed an adaptive reuse of the space: it’s been turned into a café and membership-based business center. Calling it the homebuilder’s first crowdsourced amenity in any community, the repurposed former welcome center, now named Crossvine at Connerton, opened in mid-October.

Crossvine at Connerton, according to a statement, features organic and ethically and responsibly grown coffees from A Cup of Organic, along with teas, pastries, sandwiches, soups and salads. It will also have café style seating plus a membership-based business center geared to neighbors working from home and small meetings.

“We are thrilled to retrofit Crossvine at Connerton into a usable and requested amenity based on the feedback of our neighbors,” Lennar Tampa Division President Mark Metheny says in the statement. “So many in our community are looking for a fun and useful space (and) as so many parents are now working from home, this space became even more prevalent and needed for the community.”

Connerton, made up of four villages, is built on 4,800 acres of wildlife preserve that was once the original Conner family cattle ranch.
