NAPLES — The Holocaust Museum and Education Center of Southwest Florida has received a pledge of $1 million from Janet Guttman Cohen.

The record-setting gift — the largest the museum has ever received — will be applied to the museum’s $3.5 million capital campaign for the purchase and renovation of a new building on U.S. 41 in Naples.

In recognition of this gift, the museum will name its new building in honor of Janet and Harvey Cohen.

According to a press release, Janet Cohen felt moved to make the gift because of the importance of educating young people about the dangers of prejudice and the importance of confronting hatred and violence.

“The lessons of the Holocaust must never be forgotten,” she states in the release.

“Mrs. Cohen’s contribution is a momentous gift for the museum,” adds Susan Suarez, the museum’s executive director, in the release. “This is the largest gift we have ever received. It puts the museum on strong financial footing for our future in our new home.”

The museum has now received more than $2 million toward its $3.5 million goal, according to the release, and its new location is expected to open to the public in late 2018.
