Hawes' new pet project

Lee County Administrator Karen Hawes initiated her own blog on the county Web site last month in an effort to improve communication with citizens and staff.

A recent blog included items about economic development, energy resource management and LeeTran's new gasoline-electric hybrid buses.

Hawes summarizes her venture into the blogosphere, writing, “It will not replace departmental press releases or information regarding ongoing projects and activities. Instead this will be a means to get the word out on the challenges we face as a county in these economic times and the good news of how we are operating the county.”

That should be a welcome change, at least for citizens concerned with business and economic issues. The current list of 11 press releases on the county Web site is typical of what's often found there. Seven of the press releases have something do with pets or animals.

Coffee Talk has often wondered, “What's with that?”

Headings of some recent press releases include, “Lessons from Dolphins,” “Audubon photo awards,” and Coffee Talk's personal favorite this week: “Pet Microchip ID Clinics for Saturdays Cancelled.”

Good to know.
