Government cheese on the move

Government didn't get its reputation for inefficiency for nothing.

The latest case in point: The city of Sarasota's parking operations division is moving offices, from the headquarters of the police department to city hall. It's a move of a few blocks, and according to a city statement, the division will now “be more conveniently located for members of the public as well as staff.”

The move came about, the release states, from an assessment new Sarasota City Manager Tom Barwin made on the location of some key functions and staff members. Barwin started in August, replacing former City Manager Bob Bartolotta, who resigned in January 2012.

“People are accustomed to doing business at City Hall,” Parking Division Manager Mark Lyons says in the release. “Having the (division) in one centralized location downtown will make it easier for people to come in and take care of their parking business.”

It all sounds great, save for one salient fact omitted from the release: The parking division, through December 2010, had already been located at city hall. Bartolotta moved it to the new police department — apparently for the same reasons Lyons and Barwin say it's now moving back to city hall. The old parking office mostly sat empty at city hall for two years, though the Sister Cities department used it for a while.

So much for convenience.
