FORT MYERS -- American Eagle will discontinue its nonstop service between Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) and Miami International Airport at the end of this month.

The company will continue connecting passengers from Fort Myers to Chicago and Dallas, a representative says, but flights to Miami will end Jan. 31.

Last month, the Lee County Port Authority announced that Southwest Airlines would be adding a new route to the list of destinations served by RSW, by adding nonstop service to Hartford, Conn., and Providence, R.I., in the early part of this year.

Southwest Florida International Airport served 7.5 million passengers in 2010. But traffic fell 12% in October, the last month for which such data has been reported.
