Business Supporting the Arts

Business Supporting the Arts will have a fine arts exhibition and public sale on Thursday, Feb. 17, at the Copy Cafe Gallery in the ComCenters at Lakewood Ranch. Business Supporting the Arts promotes Bradenton's artists in a business environment. The two featured artists will be Sue Lynn Cotton, watercolor artist, and Robert Barton, photographer.

USF local campus

receives $500,000

The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus board acknowledged during its Feb. 3 meeting the Manatee Memorial Hospital Foundation Inc.'s gift of $250,000. The money will be used for technology enhancement of the Crosley Campus Center. Matching funds under the Alec. P. Courtelis Facility Enhancement Challenge grant from the Florida Division of Colleges and Universities brings the total to $500,000.

Starting this month on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. the 5th and Lemon Saturday Market opens for business. Located in the "Lemon District" of downtown Sarasota, vendors sell everything from jewelry boxes to furniture to gourmet foods and fruits and vegetables.

TRC Staffing Services in Sarasota was named Franchise of the Year for 2004 by the Atlanta-based corporation. This is the second time in five years that owners Dale and Mary Ann Vollrath have achieved this distinction as the national company's top performing franchise.

model nationally

Findit.com, a new information portal, has entered cyberspace. After more than two years of running FindSarasota.com, a Sarasota information portal, the model was used to support a nationwide directory. More inclusive than a traditional search engine, and much broader than a local directory, Findit helps people retrieve information from a variety of sources using a simple interface - a search box and the United States map. This intuitive information layout combined with a variety of other information services offers Internet users an alternative way to locate and gather information on the Web.

honored in Big Apple

Dr. Herbert Silverstein of the Silverstein Institute was an honored guest speaker at the recent American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery national conference in New York. More than 10,000 ear, nose and throat specialists attended the conference, in which Silverstein, an otolaryngologist gave three presentations on advances in the field: new treatments for Meniere's disease, minimally invasive outpatient otological surgery and advances in otosclerosis surgery.

The Glenridge on Palmer Ranch recently hosted a dedication ceremony for its new 34,349-square-foot health and rehabilitation facility, The Carroll Center. The building was named after Mary Fran Carroll, past chairperson of the board of directors at The Glenridge and a longtime Sarasota community leader.

Kurt E. Lee, formerly a partner in the litigation department of Sarasota's Abel Band firm, established Kurt E. Lee PL in Nokomis. The firm will focus its practice on helping individuals and businesses resolve business and commercial disputes, such as those that involve contracts, real estate, and construction issues and disputes that involve probate estates and trusts.

Sarasota native Richard Edward Torrington, CFP, has moved home to open a new financial planning company, Edward Kennedy Mason Financial. Torrington celebrated the recent grand opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house. The firm will be a full-service financial planning company specializing in defensive asset management.
