Longboat chamber changes

name to include St. Armands

New name. New logo. New members.

The Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce announced Tuesday the addition of Lido Key and St. Armands Key to its formal name, forming a triumvirate for businesses in the three beachfront communities.

"We had been talking about it for about three-and-half years now," said Gail Loefgren, president of the chamber. "We are just formalizing what we already did."

The chamber, now called the Longboat Key, Lido Key, St. Armands Key Chamber of Commerce, also unveiled its new logo, in a morning press conference at its office at 6960 Gulf of Mexico Drive.

Loefgren said discussion about the name change originally began after the chamber received phone calls during season asking for information about places to stay and where to go on the Circle and Lido Key.

"People call the chamber when they want to travel," Loefgren said. Currently, the chamber Web site is receiving about 350,000 hits a month, with many inquiries for Lido Key and St. Armands Circle.

Plans emerged at a board retreat in October when the group decided that it was time to start the process.

Sandy Tull, chairman of the chamber's board of directors, made a formal announcement prior to the press conference at the St. Armands Circle Association meeting. Tull said members were "very pleased" with the addition of the two areas. After the announcement, one St. Armands merchant came up to Tull, asking for a membership packet so she could join right away.

Currently, 21 St. Armands retailers are members of the chamber, but the combining of the areas has the potential for adding about 80 new businesses to the chamber, which, according to Diana Corrigan, executive director of the St. Armands Circle Association, "doubles the marketing and business potential."
