FORT MYERS — A late-year boost in passenger traffic at Southwest Florida International Airport in December couldn't make up for earlier declines in 2012.
In December, passenger traffic through the Fort Myers airport rose 1.8% to 679,672 people. However, passenger traffic in 2012 fell 2.5% to 7.3 million people compared with 2011, according to the Lee County Port Authority.
Declines earlier in the year were due in large part to reductions in service by the airlines. High oil prices forced airlines to trim frequency of flights and many switched to smaller airplanes to serve Fort Myers. However, traffic has rebounded in the last few months as airlines boosted service to Fort Myers to meet higher demand.
In December, Delta flew the most passengers in and out of Fort Myers with 157,448 people. AirTran, JetBlue, Spirit and United rounded off the top five airlines in Fort Myers.
