Career day has gotten an upgrade.

A standout example is area insurance firm FCCI, which in mid-July hosted an inaugural event dubbed “Career with a Purpose: A Day at FCCI Insurance Group.” The event was held at FCCI’s Lakewood Ranch headquarters.

The event gave 62 young adults a chance to learn about the different aspects of the insurance industry. The group included FCCI interns and interns at agencies the company partners with. Out of the attendees, 10 were virtual participants — interns based in other offices who used technology to tune in.

On the flip side, the day was part of efforts at FCCI to increase hiring as more workers retire and the company, with $837 million in revenue in 2018, continues to grow.

Attendees at the Career with a Purpose day heard from a guest speaker, saw presentations from people working in insurance and worked together to create an advertisement for publication. “We were very thoughtful and strategic in putting together the components,” FCCI Marketing and Community Relations Consultant Kristi Hoskinson tells Coffee Talk. The goal was simple: inspire young people to consider a career in insurance.

“There was an underlying theme about insurance, but the bigger picture was to inspire our students to be the best they can be,” says Lisa Krouse, FCCI board member and chief administrative officer.

Part of the day included an exercise called The Human Insurance Chain that showed interns different roles that exist within commercial insurance. Hoskinson says the activity allowed participants to see the variety and potential within the industry.

FCCI has already gotten positive feedback from interns about the experience. In surveys, Hoskinson says attendees called the experience eye-opening, with one respondent writing, “There are opportunities for virtually any profession in the insurance industry.”

Krouse can see the event expanding in the future. “The thought and vision is that it could become something greater for the benefit of the industry and the region,” she says. “One could imagine how this could grow into a multicarrier, multiagency, multidiscipline event.”

FCCI involved some key partners in this year’s event, including CareerEdge Funders Collaborative; University of South Florida, Sarasota-Manatee; Oceanus Partners; Florida Association of Insurance Agents; State College of Florida; CareerSource Suncoast; Greater Sarasota County Chamber of Commerce; and The Loyalty Group Consulting.

“There were many who had a vested interest in this inaugural experience,” Hoskinson says. “It’s just the start of something great to come.”
