Just before Shark Tank star and FUBU founder Daymond John emerged from the green room at Sarasota's Ritz-Carlton for his speech Feb. 15, the audience of 500 attendees was instructed: No flash photography, no videos, no recordings ... You know the routine of the big media celebs.

In fact, John apparently is so conscious of security and the social media paparazzi, he declined spending the night before his speech at the Sarasota Ritz. He made arrangements at another Sarasota hotel, he told his hosts, to avoid his stalkers.

But being the entrepreneur, marketer and entertainer that he is, John early on in his speech stopped his story telling to allow audience members to snap photos.

John gave the audience what he called his three social-media power poses, two of which you see above. You had to move fast to catch him, and John's host and sponsor, Mark Pritchett, CEO of the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, did. He captured two of the three poses from his seat at the head table.

For the next 90 minutes, John captivated his audience with an energized, humor-packed, entertaining monologue of his life, complete with multimedia montages of photos, videos and hip-hop and, most important, laced with his five “Shark points” — lessons for entrepreneurial success.

S — Set a goal ... If you don't, someone will set one for you.

H — Do your homework and analytics.

A — “Amor.” Love your family more than what you do. “Strategic partners start at home.”

R — Remember, you are the brand. Capture who you are in two to five words.

K — Keep swimming. Don't give up.

Among the best advice from his mother: “Responsibility cannot be given. Responsibility must be taken.”
Daymond John is more than one of the sharks. He's a one-man show — with a message that resonates for younger generations.
