TAMPA — Former Port Richey mayor Richard Rober and his wife, Averill, have received a six-month prison sentence for conspiring to defraud the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Attorney's office for the Middle District of Florida says.

In addition to the prison sentence, they also received six months of home detention and the court ordered them to pay $55,305 in restitution to the IRS. The couple pleaded guilty to one count of criminal information in May.

According to a release, Richard Rober diverted checks made out to his wife's business, Gator Water and Wastewater Management Inc., and used the money for personal purposes without reporting it to the accountants who prepare their tax returns. The Robers then filed joint individual income tax returns with the IRS, which purposely neglected to include this income.

From 2005 to 2007, the Robers under-reported more than $239,000 in income, ignoring tax liabilities of more than $55,000, the release says.

Richard Rober, 52, resigned in March from his post as mayor upon hearing that charges would be filed against him.
