Being media savvy is a prerequisite for most successful politicians,. Now one local Manatee County official is hoping to put that “news” knowledge to work as owner of a Bradenton news Web site.

Long-time Manatee County Commissioner Joe McClash, who owns several rental real estate properties and previously owned McClash Heating & Cooling, has started The Bradenton Times Web site (thebradentontimes.com).

McClash describes the new venture as a reaction to the recent decline in local news coverage and plans to have it fill that niche as a community resource with local reporting. The new site has been operating for two months and has a staff of four.

Although he's publisher and president, McClash plans to leave the news decisions to his staff, which come principally at this point from the Bradenton Herald. McClash says the Web site will not be political, although it will house editorials in its Sound Off section.
