St. Petersburg-based Cycle Brewing owners Doug and Tara Dozark were pretty excited when Ratebeer.com, a user-generated beer review website, invited the couple out to California for a free trip — sans kids.
Then they got the really good news: Ratebeer.com named Cycle Brewing Best Brewer in Florida, based on 2016 scores from beer drinkers worldwide who post opinions about new beers. Cycle Brewing also earned top scores for its signature barrel-aged Hazelnut Imperial Stout and Rare Scoop, a collaboration with Dania Beach-based 3 Sons Brewing Co.
Ratebeer didn't tell the Dozarks anything about the awards when the couple got word about the trip to Santa Rosa, Calif.
“There's no hint that you are going to win something,” Dozark says in a statement. “I was quite shocked.”
Ratebeer.com, established in 2000, has attracted hundreds of thousands of members from more than 100 countries who have rated beers worldwide, according to the statement. “It's bragging rights more than anything,” Dozark says. “Unlike a competition in which you choose what you enter. All of our beers are under scrutiny.”
