Blue Head Tequila, a Tampa-based Tequila company, has reached a turning point, or maybe a celebration point.

After four years of investment, including licenses and regulations, it is posting a profit. As its distribution channels continue to grow, sales should be 400% higher and Blue Head should do well more than $1 million in sales this year, says Jesse Carrigan, 62, president and CEO.

In two weeks, it is debuting a margarita mix, Quila Maria's. Made in Mexico, it includes real lime juice and no artificial flavors.

And recently the company got another marketing jolt at the 2009 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, where its tequila won a Best in Show and Double Gold medals among 27 judges. It also won awards at the show last year.

The photo on the label of the tequila is a rendering of Jose Leonardo Lopez, one of the partners in the business and a Nativo, or full-blood decedent of a tribe of indians in Mexico.

The tequila and margaritas are made in Mexico, where the agave plant grows and where the name is trademarked.

Blue Head started in Tampa five years ago and has five employees in Tampa and 13 in Mexico. It is also one of the youngest companies invited to be in the tequila museum in Tequila, Mexico. The company donated a bottle and a prize medallion to the museum.
