BRADENTON — Sen. Michael Bennett, R-Bradenton, will run for Supervisor of Elections in Manatee County, the statesman announced Friday.

Bennett seeks to replace fellow Republican Bob Sweat, who is retiring this year.

Bennett must seek a new office in the next election, having met his term limit in the Florida Senate. Bennett has served as the Florida Senate's President Pro Tempore since 2012.

Friday's announcement from Bennett brings the field of candidates running for the supervisor's office to seven. Other candidates include Edward Bailey, Richard Bedford, Eric Hanson, Rodney Smithley, Jane von Hahmann, and Charles Williams Jr., the only Democrat in the race.
