Free-market ideas are under attack, so who better to stand up to the socialists than entrepreneurs?
Phil Josberger, a Realtor with Cameron Real Estate Services in Naples, is launching a chapter of the Bastiat Society in Lee and Collier counties, and he's recruiting business owners to join.
Named after French economist Frederic Bastiat who promoted the ideas of free trade and personal liberty, the Bastiat Society is a network of entrepreneurs who seek to defend the free-enterprise system. The board of the society includes Brad Hobbs, an economics professor at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers where free-enterprise ideas are taught to students as part of the curriculum.
To start the chapter, Josberger says he's seeking to raise $4,000 for filing fees and discounted speaker fees. Annual membership will cost business owners $250, though other business professionals can join for $100.
The idea is to get business owners involved in the defense of a system in which they prospered, though Josberger notes that the nonprofit group doesn't take any political stand.
And Josberger realizes that business owners are busy with their own companies. “We're competing with their business time and their home time,” he says. Still, with the free-market principles under attack, Josberger says business owners can be advocates for the success of these ideas.
