TAMPA — The U.S. Attorneys office for the Middle District of Florida, which stretches from the Gulf Coast through Orlando and Jacksonville, recovered more than $51 million in 2012.
The office, in total, collected $51.23 million in the fiscal year, according to a statement. Out of that, $44.6 million was from civil actions, while $6.5 was related to criminal court.
U.S. Attorneys' offices nationwide, along with the department's litigating divisions, enforce and collect civil and criminal debts owed to the U.S. and criminal debts owed to federal crime victims. The largest civil collections, according to the statement, are when the government recovers money lost to fraud or other misconduct. The offices, including the Middle District, also collect fines imposed on individuals and/or corporations for violations of federal health, safety, civil rights or environmental laws.
The 94 U.S. Attorneys' offices, in total, collected $13.1 billion in criminal and civil actions during fiscal 2012, according to the statement from the Middle District, based in Tampa. That more than doubles the $6.5 billion collected in fiscal 2011. The $13.1 billion, according to the Tampa office, represents more than six times the appropriated budget of the combined 94 offices for fiscal 2012.
“Working with our investigative partners to enforce the public laws is a critical part of our overall mission,” U.S. Attorney for the Middle District Robert O'Neill says in the statement. “Equally important is utilizing our capabilities to protect the interests of crime victims and replenish our federal resources. Through our collections and recovery efforts, we are holding criminals accountable for their offenses.”
