WellCare Health Plans Inc. named Anat Hakim general counsel and corporate secretary.

In her capacity running the company's legal department, she will also be a senior vice president and report to CEO Ken Burdick.

“I expect her depth of knowledge and extensive experience will build upon our legal team's already strong foundation and contribute to WellCare's mission to serve our members,” Burdick says in a statement.

Prior to joining Tampa-based WellCare, Hakim worked as a divisional vice president and associate general counsel for litigation for medical device and pharmaceuticals giant Abbott Laboratories. There, she oversaw the company's commercial and intellectual property litigation, government investigations and labor and employment counseling.

Hakim joined Abbott following a dozen years with Foley & Lardner LLP — eight of which as an equity partner with the international law firm — where she focused on patent, trademark and trade secret law and commercial litigation.

“I am excited to join WellCare and serve in a role that uniquely blends my legal and health care backgrounds,” says Hakim. “I'm looking forward to working with the team to navigate today's ever-changing health care environment and to address the industry's most complex issues.”

WellCare, which currently serves about 3.8 million members nationwide, focuses exclusively on providing government-sponsored managed care services through Medicaid, Medicare Advantage and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans.
