FORT MYERS — The December passenger count traffic edged up slightly at Southwest Florida International Airport as compared to the same month in 2015, airport officials say, pushing traffic to a new annual record.

The 840,501 passengers that deplaned to and from the Fort Myers airport in December represented a 0.6% bump from the same period in December 2015. For all of 2016, passenger traffic increased 2.8%, officials say.

“December passenger numbers helped us reach a new record of 8.6 million passengers in 2016, making it the best year since Southwest Florida International Airport opened in 1983,” says Jeff Mulder, the executive director of the Lee County Airport Authority, which runs the airport.

Delta Air Lines generated the most customers in December, with 166,006 passengers, followed by Southwest Air, at 153,949; American Airlines, with 109,654; and Spirit Airlines, at 104,595 passengers.

Overall, the airport had 8,102 airplane takeoffs or landings during the month, a decrease of 1.2% vs. the same time in 2015. The amount of freight hauled was down by 3%, to 3.8 million pounds.

The airport, known by the call letters RSW, is among the Top 50 U.S. airports as ranked by passenger traffic.
