Airport records a big month and year

FORT MYERS — Southwest Florida International Airport reported a record-breaking 958,717 passengers traveling through its terminal in December, representing a 9.8% increase compared to December 2017.

It also reported a 6% increase in annual passenger count with nearly 9.4 million travelers passing through the airport in 2018, up from 8.84 million in 2017.

“December 2018 was the best December in the 36-year history of the airport and our performance for the year was a historic best with 9,373,178 passengers,” says Lee County Port Authority Executive Director Jeff Mulder in a statement. “We appreciate the support of our airline partners in adding new markets and increasing flight schedules to meet the demand for travel to Southwest Florida.”

Delta Air Lines had the most passengers in December with 165,344 traveling to and from Fort Myers. Following Delta were Southwest with 149,892 passengers, Spirit with 121,638, Frontier at 118,516 and American with 114,081.

In addition, Page Field in Fort Myers saw 8,397 operations in December, a 15.2% increase over December 2017.
