Airport posts record figures in April

FORT MYERS — Southwest Florida International Airport reported 1,032,783 passengers traveled through the airport during April — the best April in the 34-year history of the airport.

The number of passengers is a 14.7% increase compared to April 2016, according to a press release. Year to date, passenger traffic is up 1.1% from the same period in 2016.

Southwest Airlines was the traffic leader in April with 265,761 passengers traveling to and from the airport. Also in the top five airlines for the month were Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines.

About 2.5 million pounds of air freight moved through the airport in April, an increase of 1.2% from April 2016.

The airport served 8.6 million passengers in 2016. It is one of the top 50 airports in the U.S. for passenger traffic, according to a statement.
